As you guys know we've had nothing but issues since this site opened. Most recently there was an issue with forumotion websites not allowing members into their own accounts and this happened here to NaClmine. That was enough for me.

I go more into the why's and how much better the software is at the new forum.

Here's a not-so-new scam that I just discovered on another website. People are going to sites like Craigslist and posting an ad for writing samples about various subjects. Then, after they get their STOLEN samples, they submit them to AC (Associated Content?) and get paid for others' work.

I guess I don't have to explain how badly this sickens me. If any of our members runs across this scam asking for a writing sample(s) in the hopes of making money, run away...it's most likely a scam.

I have been applying for some freelancing jobs in my area and have come across a strange dilema. All but one of these companies would like a link to my "professional blog" rather than any type of resume etc. Now, I'm not dumb, I know what a blog is, but what is entailed in a professional blog?

Does anyone here have one, or have a link to where I could find an example of one? I guess if I'm going to get a shot at any of this, I need to get with the times.

This is a classic from WF that I just love.

It's easy, just change one letter in the previous posters word. Or make an anagram of it.

You can add or take away one letter unless you find an anagram. Anagrams have to be with the existing letters only.

Like this.

Goober.

Booger. 8)

Rules.

Only one change per word. Don't add/remove a letter to make an anagram work.

If you break the above rule you will be called a bad monkey.

If you can't figure out a letter or anagram ...

Added a pile of free book page markers next to the candy. I was as ready to go as I could be.

Didn't have high expectations. Average sales at book signings nationally are only 6.5 books sold per event. To make matters worse, my signing was scheduled from noon ...

I was just thinking about how I end chapters and wondering about “rules” or conventions for those writing decisions. I didn't find much advice on ending styles on the internet so here are my own musings:

First, what IS a chapter? It is a cohesive length of storytelling that embodies movement toward the book’s main plot. This can take the form of character building, sub-plot development, establishment of setting and/or tone -- or all of the aforementioned --, but no matter what form ...

A tea cup sitting on the very edge of the table waiting for the inevitable stray elbow. Her nervousness made me nervous. It was contagious. And then later last night, I realized that she was a missing character in my story. She is the dead aunt of one of my MC's and the explanation for the rift between my MC's mother and her brother.

you should not use both a semicolon and an em dash in the same sentence!

This made me scratch my head a bit because I couldn't find any precedence for such a statement. (Also, this was written by someone who is very knowledgeable about such matters.)

So I constructed this sentence - Semicolons and em dashes are oft used correctly by most writers; some do not, but correct usage can be learned--if one cares to anyway.

I think this thread belongs to the word games forums... (I'm not too sure)

The purpose of this 'game' is to provide and assist members with a mixture of unique and 'funny' names for your story.

So if you ever get stuck; you'll hopefully stop by here and acquire some ideas!

The rules are pretty simple. Just post a name which begins with the letter the previous name ended in.

For example:

1st post: Tom

2nd post: Michael

OK, let's get started with my name...

I know I’m getting older and slower, but I caught a shrew yesterday, so I’m not that old! It’s just getting a little harder to pry myself off the nice warm bed in the morning, and I swear my two foots keep jacking the bed up overnight. That drop to the floor gets longer every day. But there’s always food in the bowl and since the two foots have given up on mending the corner of the screen door I can go out on the deck and lay in the sun anytime I want. I'm in the middle of writing a little chunk that goes into more of a past tense than the rest of the chunk.

Kinda like:

Stuffity stuff stuff written in past tense.

Some stuff that happens futherback in time than the regular past tense.

Return to the original past tense.

I don't usually find myself in this kind of conundrum, but I'm a little at a loss as to how to set up the verbs for this more past past tense, ...

I'm having a rough time reading his latest short story collection and I love all of the ones preceding it.

So, what the hell is up with this guy? Surely he has to know he's reached the end of his arc. He can't possibly be running out of dough...

Or have I just changed as a reader?

The book actually consists of two stories. If you flip the book over, the other story reads in the other direction, so that when you come to the last page of either side you are confronted with the last page of the other story upside down.

My question today is about how human can you make a non-human in a storyline without crossing the that's just ridiculous line.

When I started expanding my story and created a map to help me along, I mentioned that the map software created some topography that gave me some plot ideas. One of the plot ideas is the inclusion of cetaceans (whales and dolphins) in my story. They live in what is called The Closed Ocean, a body of water with no saltwater exits.

My humans are ...

Obviously you need a main overarching plot, but what about the small sub-plots that really make the story interesting?

Do you give "plot" much thought in the first draft? Or wing it, then strengthen and add to what you have in the next draft(s)?

How do you finally bring all of your plot lines together into one cohesive unit?

Plots, for the most part, are relatively easy. It's the entire reason you sit down to write a book - because you have a great beginning and an end that you want to see transpired to paper.

The biggest problem I have with plots, is how to organize the in betweens. For example - in the book I'm writing now, I see a series developing around the main character. I'm not worried so much about that now, because I have to make the first book good enough to even get published before I can even think ...
