Anne Rice?
I was under the impression that Anne Rice was one of the greats that everyone loved to read, so I picked up one of her books from a used book store.
Maybe it's just the constant interruptions of my daily life, but I'm having a really hard time getting into it. Does anyone have some words of encouragement or an argument in the defense of Anne Rice to help me keep going through this book? It's Queen of the Damned...yes I realize it's the 3rd in a series.
Tell me you loved it and it gets way better soon. Thanks!

Re: Anne Rice?
I read all of the Vampire novels up until Memnoch the Devil, and then one after that as well, sometime later, titled Armand (I think that was the title.) I liked them well enough, though I did always get the impression that somewhere in Rice's house, the real versions of these books lie somewhere. Versions that can only be sold in 'adult' book stores. Rice likes very much to use the word sensual when describing both the characters and writing style of these books. Outside of her personal lexicon, I think the more common term is softcore. Rice also had/has a tendency to try and downplay the homoerotisism of the books, claiming that vampires are attracted to vampires, gender notwithstanding. My question always was, "If that is the case, then how come there are no hetero vampire relationships in any of these books?"
What up, Anne? 'Splain me!

I didnt' know any of that. Thanks Wreybies.
One more question. I just read a part that said Lestat's mother was also his lover..? I think maybe her name was Abigail?
I didn't catch the homo/hetero thing. Although that explains a few things from Interview with the Vampire (movie) a bit more clearly now.

Not really his lover, so much. She becomes his vampire consort at one point. Remember, vampires never have sex in Rice's world, they just get all hot and bothered. It was the only time I remember a boy/girl relationship in the series, though.
And, the tiny bit of homo-play that was shown in the movie was massively downplayed in comparison to the book. Rather like it was in The Color Purple as well.

Re: Anne Rice?
You really should start with the first of the series, Interview with a Vampire. The vampire chronicles are good, but I wouldn't read after the fourth book, I think I also stopped at Armand.
I also read some other stuff from Anne Rice. I can't remember the names, but it had to do with witches. I also read East of Eden ( I think is the name) that was a strange book.
Wrey is right, the book swings on the verge of homosexual tendencies. I am not sure if that was her intention, or if she was trying to show a close intimacy between the vampires. None of the relationships last though, because after spending a hundred years or so with someone, I think they tire of each other. Makes sense.
Anyway the books are pretty good, the first is the best. Try picking up the first one and go from there.

I tried to read one of her books, but could never get into it. I've never been much into vampire stories though.
Re: Anne Rice?
I absolutely love everything about Anne Rice, so keep in mind I'm likely very biased.
I've read all of the book in the Vampire Chronicles, and I agree, after Memnoch they get to be kind of dry... save for Pandora which is one of my favorites. The later books she intertwines my favorite (the Mayfair Witches) with the Vampire Chronicles and they are AMAZING.
I'd say, to get a better feel for prime Rice, try The Witching Hour. It's worth every one of the million and a half pages. :)

Re: Anne Rice?
Thanks Lady Goodman. I'm just now finishing QotD and it did turn out to be an interesting read. Not one of those that I couldn't put down, but I usually looked forward to picking up where I left off the last time. I appreciate that she has a very intellectual way of writing. I feel like my vocabulary has been thoroughly exercised. Her discriptions are also very vivid and rich.
Maybe if I read more books like this, my writing style will rise from the YA level to the adult level. That would be nice.

Re: Anne Rice?
MC, you write YA lit? Do you have a specific genre you're detailed in?

Re: Anne Rice?
My writing is usually considered YA. I'm pretty much all over the board with it right now. I have a few historical fictions, a bit of poetry, some fantasy and even a murder mystery. Nothing published.
And you?

That's pretty exciting! I'm big on the fantasy/sci-fi/horror genres... just because I live a normal life, I sure in the hell don't want to read about other people doing that
I have a tendency to be slightly... vulgar and a little "dark". Not to mention flat out lewd. I write things I want to read, so whatever that classifies me as. Hehe.

Re: Anne Rice?
Mayflower Witches, that is what I read. LOL!
My stories that I write or think of and have started-my characters die. Everyone dead, dead, dead.
It's funny that I write like that because when the MC dies at the end of a book that I have read, it kinda makes me mad.

Not a thing wrong with that at all.
Some of my very best work is not work I could ever, ever, ever show to my mother. No way.

Haha. I still remember the day my mom found a copy of Blatty's the Exorcist under my pillow in 5th grade.
Too bad she had no idea it was my 9th read in a year
