An Interesting Few Months Empty An Interesting Few Months

A lot of you guys probably don't know me very well, seeing how I haven't frequented the forum very often in the last few months. Truth be told, I've been caught up in other endeavours that have taken up considerable amounts of my time. In a few weeks I'll be sitting my final exams in a Humanities course that I started two years ago. During that time I've learned a great deal about myself as a person. Thanks to my psychology professor, I've realised the true meaning of Carpe Diem. So, now, I've made a conscious decision to get back into my writing in a big way, as soon as my exams are over. I feel that, due to the time restraints and the horrible addictiveness of the Internet, my writing time has been limited to one or two hours a week, and I feel that is not good enough for any aspiring author.

Additionally, I'm very proud of the 74 I got in my psychology assignment, which was the highest mark my professor has ever given a mature student, beating the old record by two clear marks. He called my essay "exceptional, eye-opening, and superbly written". And while there's a huge difference in academic and creative writing, it's given me great confidence to continue the rewrite of my first ever book. Hopefully, all things going well, I should have a first draft churned out before the end of the year. I really feel that my writing is at a point where it's as close to my best as it's liable to get. I hope that doesn't sound egotistical, but if you don't believe in yourself, why would anyone else?

There's always room for improvement, though, and I've noticed a huge improvement from the first time I decided to write a story some six years ago. Hopefully all these years of work will be conducive towards my goal of getting published. We all have dreams, right?

Good to hear from you my friend. I have long held your writing in high regard, as you know. I also share your frustration with time lost to the internet. I've cut back my on-line time by nearly 90%, carefully limiting discussions or responses to a small group of people. My "real" job has been quite time consuming this spring, and, as those time demands lessen, I plan to devote all my spare time to finishing two books for release this summer.

Congratulations on your academic success. I hope it quickly translates into publishing accomplishment. And, as I have said to you before, let me know when your first book comes out so I can be among your first fans. You have my personal email . . . keep in touch.

Thanks for the kind reply, Dean. It's good to hear from you too. I just logged on to your website and ordered a copy of your book, but I'm not sure if the order went through, or if I have in fact ordered it at all. Maybe you can tell me if I have? If not, I'll just wait and see if it comes.

Congratulations, and I wish you all the best with it. I enjoyed reading your bio on the site -- very funny and informative.

The Internet can be very time-consuming, as I have discovered to my great detriment, but I'm glad that there are helpful people like you who are willing to take time to impart your helpful knowledge and wisdom for young and fledgling writers like myself. It is much appreciated and respected.

Sam.

It's just a matter of time until you are selling your books commercially.

Sam.

Time on the internet is definately a writing-killer. It is an issue I have been wrestling with for over a year. Do I withdraw from all the writing sites and concentrate on my own books or do I maintain affiliation, only perhaps limit my time? I do enjoy the exchange of ideas that happens in places like this and isolation leads to stale writing. So, I guess the only issue is "how much" is the right balance?

I wrestle with this same issue. Especially since I started this website. The interaction with other writers is very valuable imo. I haven't written anything recently though.
