Mine is Katerina.

She is a delusional young lady with a narcissistic bent.

She killed her sister because she was convinced her brother-in-law actually loved her.

She excuses doing bad things to people in one of two ways: either they don't love her and thus deserve it, or the do love her and won't mind.

Oh, and she's a budding nymphomaniac.

My dream girl, Mike

She sounds like a keeper!

I'm not sure about mine... I'll have to think about it. Probably Mr. Kellerman in my short A Question of Faith. He's the one character I really became invested in and seemed to understand.

I felt very deeply for Morton in Suicidal Tendencies. Even though I put him through hell.

My favorite character is a tough one because I have 5 major characters in my novel.

Moriana Keene, Bradyn Preston, Liam Briggs, Contessa Lang, and Kyle Bodeen.

"The Avenger" is by far my favorite character. I cannot tell you who or what "The Avenger" is...you'll just have to read my book! Wink

I can definitely say Lisa Angel Scoffer, and one of the top 5 is Ra'ef.

She's a 12-year-old girl in one of my stories. Back in Kindergarten, she discovered a "voice" in her head who calls himself Ra'ef. He's a kind gentle voice that provides a source of comfort when bullies pick on her and get her in trouble. To prove that he is real, he gave her a teddy bear with the letters "LI" and "SA" on the bottom of the feet. At the time, Lisa already knew how to read, and was astonished by the fact that he knew as well. He always called her his "precious jewel", even naming her Jewel, and becomes a father figure for her.

Lisa becomes a very quiet and shy little girl. Her parents move around a lot, and she's never sure of anything. But when in distress, she turns on noises all around her room, opens the window, and listens for the soft speaker who echoes with warm love and care that can be felt in the atmosphere. Because of this character and relationship, Lisa has no interest in boys or social activities, despite being very smart.

By the time she turns 12, Ra'ef has given her a design of clothes (dark, baggy clothing), and a taste for other things. She eventually becomes so restricted and bottled up by Ra'ef that she begins to become a stranger at the dinner table with her own two parents. Ra'ef even teaches Lisa about his perspective on life, that everything is based on fear. "Fear yourself," he would say, "and you survive." or, "overcome this fear, and you will be successful."

It's part of a massive riddle. Solve it and I'll give you a 1000 cookies.

Her father James is also part of my Top 5 character list, and his cousin, George, is in the top 10. Everyone I know loves the interaction between these two assassins. James is high in leadership of the bunch, skilled, and very serious. He recently became a Christian and is trying to figure out life (which conflicts with his life as an assassin).

On the other hand, George is extremely jocular and speaks very matter-of-factly. It's like nothing can ruffle his feathers. "Oh, there's 5 missiles headed our way. I'm surprised they didn't change the location of the launchers yet."

"George!" James screamed, "Do something!"

"Don't panic. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1..."

"There see? We're alive."

James caught his breath as he wiped his wet forehead with sweaty palms. "Yeah, but barely. Don't you dare do that again."

"What? Dodge the missiles? Then we really would be dead wouldn't we?"

Woah! All characters described sound pretty sweet.

My favorite has to be the protagonist of my story, Nicholas. He's a collector of souls (which include emotions/memories/behavioral patterns) and so writing him is interesting. He does a lot of things I wouldn't do, and sometimes I'm so furious with him for things he decides to do that I have to skip around chapters, using my outline to write about a different character. He's sarcastic and dark, but he's also romantic and childlike. I hate him. But I love him :)

Also, I love how when, as a reader, you talk about characters as if they're real people - you get a stink eye. But as a writer, well hell, people must just accept we're a little off our rockers eh?

My equal to that character is none other than G.D. Wallez (George Douglas). He was born into a poor family with an abusive father always after get-rich-quick schemes that puts his family into deeper debt. His mother tried to take him to church, but both he and his mother were belted in the face every time he went. Throughout his life, he picked up various skills including martial arts, survival, business, and the art of torture from different mentors he found as he moved around. The older boy who taught him torture of bugs and animals provided him a comfort every time his father hit him.

Eventually, his mother was murdered for insurance money, and the two moved to Central America where living is cheaper. When Wallez stood up to his old man, he tied him to a chair and tested the pain tolerance of the human body when he discovered that he had the winning lottery ticket. He put almost all of his money into a high-yield 10-year CD and the rest he kept in a He finished high school, became a registered nurse, and started working on becoming a surgeon when midway he decided to practice business law.

With a group of other salesmen, he bought out a company and turned the corporation into a proprietorship, which means he know owned every single share in the business. He started building an empire in which he collected several kinds of successful markets that cycled through his business. For example, he bought a dying paper production company so that all the paper all his other businesses use come from that company. Being a shareholder, he is selling products to himself, and thus recycling money back to himself. He even (almost) bought a health insurance company so that all the companies that work for him buy insurance plans from this company, thus, the money he would be giving away to employees in the form of health insurance comes back. The same applies for a trucking company that does all the transportation for his products.

He's making money off of the trucking company by selling their services to other companies that aren't his. The truck driver buys his health insurance plans, and gives heavy discounts in delivering paper to the insurance company that then mails the paper to the trucker in the form of notices.

Anyway, he gets a hold of a successful Mercenary company called All Factor and uses them to take over some countries in Africa, turning them into his own country. He then began planting factories into his country where labor would be cheaper in production, and helped their economy. After just 10 years, the country is becoming a 2nd class nation, with skyscrapers and modern cities, but with large amounts of poor rural areas.

Wallez started going to the church his mother used to attend, and they believe that he is the Second Messiah, Son of God and Son of Man. At first, he puts these off, but eventually catches on the idea and starts believing it himself. They tell him the world is rightfully his, and that he must set up a 1,000-year reign.

The Catholic Church opposes him, as do the Arabs in the Middle East. So he becomes allies with Israel and uses All Factor, the mercenary company, and trains his army, turning it into a professional fighting machine, equipped with borrowed and armed satellites, tanks, and modern weapon and defense systems. His army is so well trained, every 35 days that goes by for a soldier who did not participate in any combat, must go back to a 2-week training program to brush up on his skills.

His country's army consists of 2 million foot soldiers with very light gun laws. This means that if a nation like the United States tried to invade (that has a total of 1 million members combined), they would be facing a completely armed and well-trained population. In Black Hawk Down, less than 100 Army members faced up against as many as 2-5,000 armed Somalis. Imagine of that 5,000 were as well trained as the Marines!

He is also a pedophilic sadist with a taste for young girls who cooks and eats the victims to destroy evidence. He is involved in the sex trade in Europe and with these connections, he was able to help form the Covenant Reformation Group (CRG). This is a military extremist group bent on serving God with the elimination of the Catholic Church. They're main base of operations is in Rome, and they use "stolen" tanks from Wallez's personal army, Dragon Skin body armor, state-of-the-art RPGs from Russia, night vision goggles, sniper rifles, and the training of mercenary soldiers.

The CRG's most feared operation was holding an oil tanker hostage in the Manila Bay. If destroyed, it would take out half the port, and poison the good fishing water for days. They completely wiped out a Carabinieri unit trying to get on board, taking their weapons, Kevlar, and equipment. They might have been successful if the weapons dealer professional with them didn't betray them.

Of the characters I've created, I'd say my favorite is a gentleman named Beacon. Whom I have used in several of the stories I've posted on fanfiction.com.
Beacon is a recruiter for a multi-dimensional organization who enters
the realities of various shows and movies to recruit characters who
either get the short end in their stories (like Mystique in the third
Xmen movie) or have stories with unresolved endings (like the Ultimen
from Justice League Unlimited). The organization can even rescue a
character from certain death if they can do it without being
noticed.(Lieutenant Helga Sinclair from Atlantis: The Lost Empire.)
Just my way of rescuing interesting characters that I think deserve a
new chance in life and I hope other writers pick up the idea. Probably
sounds vain to want to start something like this, but I think it would
be interesting to see if I can inspire other writers to rescue their
favorite lose end and/or unfortunate characters.

Your favorite character that you created Empty Re: Your favorite character that you created

I'd have to say my favorite character is one I haven't used in a story. I took a writing workshop at the local junior college. An excersize we had to do was take an unsympathetic character and make him sympathetic. I was assigned a child molester. Great. How do you make such a heinous villain sympathetic to the reader?

Luckily for me, I was also taking a Human Sexuality course at the time.

My character, still nameless, has a 5 year old son. In terror of his deviant urges, he breaks into family planning clinics and steals birth control pills. He keeps himself chemically castrated to protect his son from his perversion.

Sick, I know. And I've written characters I've enjoyed much more than him. But I have to say I'm most proud of what I accomplished in creating him.

Your favorite character that you created Empty Re: Your favorite character that you created

My favorite character is an (intended) minor player in my current manuscript who is taking it over. Helen was a rich snob from an elite college when she met Willie. She was maliciously amused by his affection, even though his sister, her college roommate, was almost as rich as she was.

Her cousin (the bad-guy-in-chief) loaded her with psychometric drugs and had her committed in order to control the family fortune. She escaped before her untimely death due to complications caused by her mental collapse. The only person she could think of (she wasn’t thinking very well at that point) who might help her wouldn’t turn her in for any amount of money Willie.

After months of work, screaming and assorted “expert” help”, Helen came back, all of them.

Helen, the cold, brilliant, power hungry bitch who “Used to be an efficiency expert for Roman slave galley captains”.

Hermoine, the charming hell-for-leather eco-warrior adventuress who is madly in love with Willie, but not enough to give up her custom Kawasaki super bike. She is “addicted to danger as surely as the lowliest New York needle fiend is to his white powder.”

Harriet, the psychotic murderess, always seeking a reason to visit the bloodshed she craves on anyone who attracts the enmity of her ‘sisters’. “There’s no other way to put it love, Harriet is one sick puppy!”.

Unnamed (as yet)- an aesthetic exercise and martial arts devotee, who kills their spare time by lifting weights and devising a new amalgam of Karate and Gung-fu to suit her unique characteristics

The animal. The animal is something from the depths of Helen’s psyche that no-one wants to confront. “The Animal wasn’t really a person, he decided. There was something about her that affected people like a not quite heard sound in graveyard during the still hours of the pre-dawn. Something that watched from just beyond the boundaries of merely human senses and made it’s own judgments by it’s own inhuman standards. The animal was just plain scary.”

They all ganged up and convinced me that abnormally fast reaction times and stronger muscles were perfectly reasonable side effects of the LSD / methamphetamine cocktail.

A fascinating young lady I fell lucky to have met!

Chuck,

Characters with psychological problems are the best to write - especially ones with multiple faceted personalities. I want Helen to be my best friend in the world. Talk about never having a dull moment :).

So you said an "intended" minor character - take it she's a stage stealer?

Your favorite character that you created Empty Re: Your favorite character that you created

LG
Helen is a cold manipulative bi**h, a brilliant organizer and well connected in the international community. She handles business deals and is the real organizer of my merry band of idealistic juvenile delinquents.

Hermione is the stage stealer. An adrenaline junky on steroids, she is dedicated to the environment, sex and living on the edge. She has the charm of a little girl with her "campfire outdoorsy look" and "perfect 'aw shucks' embarrassed smile", but she rides a motorcycle like a madwoman, sneaks into central Africa by herself to video tribal massacres, and has a great way with people.

"Aldo, I thought we knew each other. Do I really have to break your finger? You're going to tell me anyway. What will it be, a thousand Euros, or a thousand Euros and a broken finger? Or two? Or a dozen? There is more than one bone in a finger, you know." Hermione is just all heart.

The other personalities are less important for what they do than for the fact that everyone knows they are there, watching and waiting until their turn comes. As Hermione put it, "I can pretty much flip to the right personality for the situation now. It used to be everyone wanted to take over all the time. It was like living in a random numbers generator! I was really crazy then. Now I control my personality changes. We timeshare, sort of.”

My problem is that she is not the protagonist, but everyone that has read the manuscript says she is the only ‘real’ character that they can like, understand and identify with. My wheelchair bound woman is too determined to accept no sympathy and do everything for herself (which I don’t see as unrealistic, but others do), the protagonist is almost irrelevant to the plot and the person who should have been the protagonist is too distant. The others have, so far, kept in their places as minor characters.

Think of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which was the inspiration when I started this beast. Verne told it from the professor’s viewpoint, but Aronnax was essentially passive, an observer. The real center of the book was Captain Nemo, but we never learned much about him. The only personality was Ned Land, the irreverent Canadian harpooner.

Verne’s story was a narrative about events, typical of the late 1800’s, but out of vogue today. Today the market wants books about people, not events, and changing the focus of the concept to the people is a real challenge. I am trying for a two level novel. As a quick read it should be an absorbing thriller with a good mix of action and human interaction.

On a deeper level it is a struggle between a man and his demons. Dickie (Nemo), though brilliant in field theory, is pretty average in his outlook and values. So how does he handle ultimate power and responsibility? When he is ordered to surrender himself and his invention to the FBI his response is;

“There can be no compromise on this issue. These discoveries could produce a hydrogen bomb that would fit in a flashlight. Supposed some responsible government official decides to sell the plans for a gravity generator to an Arab oil billionaire for a few million in a Swiss bank? You know what happens if you put a flask of hydrogen, or even just water between two gravity generators and slam a massive overload spike through them? It takes a lot of power, but you only have to maintain it for a few millionth of a second to initiate a fission reaction.

"Think of all those poor deprived fanatics who have only a few kilos of plastic explosives to make their final statement. With a little work and a few million dollars of Arab oil money an H bomb could be engineered to the size of that pen in your shirt pocket. How’s that for giving your final religious or political statement a real bang? If I loose control, I believe my inventions will be responsible for more deaths in a day than Hitler, Stalin and Mao managed in a half century. I can not accept that.”

What happens to a man who has to deal with that kind of responsibility?

So, have you got any good ideas? Or maybe some good cheese to go with my whines?

PS-hey Garm, I hope I’m not crowding your definition of thread hijacking too hard. I’ll try to get my feces assembled and start a thread of my own soon. I need a few 36 hour days! Quite a few.
